If your subject niche surrounds the world of business & economics, have you considered a teaching role abroad? Demand for English business skills is one the rise globally, so there is an opportunity to suit most needs. This includes teaching business & economics at a college or university, or evening school with full-time workers. Either way, teaching abroad can be a highly rewarding experience.
In terms of what schools ask for, you’ll likely need to have at least a Bachelor's Degree in a subject surrounding business, finance, or economics. Moreover, if you’re looking to teach in a university-based setting, institutions will typically require a postgraduate teaching diploma, and in some cases, at least 1-3 years’ worth of in-class experience. However, this isn’t always the case, as some schools will consider your application as long as you hold a relevant Bachelor's Degree.
Ultimately, the requirements surrounding teaching business & economics abroad will depend on the type of institution you wish you teach in, as well as the location. Read on to find out what you need to know.
Experience isn’t always required to teach business & economics abroad. For example, if you’re looking for a more casual role in countries such as Vietnam or Chile, seasoned professionals have a requirement to learn business practices in English. As such, classes will focus more on the English language itself, as opposed to in-depth economic theory.
On the contrary, if you’re looking for a serious career change in a highly established academic setting, then experience is a must. This will include private institutions or universities that require experienced teachers with a number of years’ worth of in-class experience.
These roles typically come with lucrative salaries and lengthy contract obligations. Moreover, some locations are known to offer accommodation stipends, return airfares, health insurance, and other perks.
Regardless of where you decide to teach, you will be required to hold a relevant Bachelor's Degree at a minimum. This will need to be in a subject linked to business, finance, or economics. Your application will gain greater attention if you hold a relevant Master’s Degree.
Furthermore, if you’re looking to teach business & economics in a country known for its high academic standards (for example Singapore or the USA), then you will also need to possess a postgraduate teaching diploma. If you’re based in the UK this will need to be a PGCE.
On the other hand, opportunities still exist even if you do not hold any qualifications. For example, if you’re a seasoned professional from within the world of business & economics with years’ of practical experience, certain institutions will consider your application. This is especially the case in academic centers that hold classes during the evenings and weekends for those looking to learn business-related skills.
If you hold the required qualifications and/or experience, you’ll be pleased to know that demand for business & economics teachers abroad is plentiful. Ready to take the plunge? If so, you’ll find lots of teaching opportunities on this page.
Our job board contains heaps of roles across dozens of countries, so spend some time thinking about the type of position you’d like to acquire. Crucially, whether you’re a seasoned business & economics teacher with years’ of experience, or a recently qualified post-graduate, there’s a role to suit most profiles.
