Are you an information technology or computer science teacher looking to experience life overseas? If so, you might be considering the merits of teaching information technology abroad. Regardless of the location, demand for computer skills has never been higher.
With that being said, schools and academic institutions are unable to catch up with this ever-growing demand, so if you're an information technology teacher with at least 1-3 years worth of in-class experience, you now have the luxury of choosing a role that’s right for you.
Interested in finding out more about what it takes to teach information technology abroad? Be sure to read our guidance notes on what’s required.
Unlike the core subjects of English, Science, and Maths - the minimum qualifications required to teach information technology abroad are often much higher. First and foremost, you will need to be in possession of a Bachelor's Degree that majored in an information technology discipline. Schools appreciate that this might come in the form of a niche area of computing, such as computer science or information science.
However, if you’re looking to obtain a lucrative role that pays well, you’ll likely be asked for a Master’s Degree, too. This will typically be the case if you’re looking to teach in a privately-run international school, or a public school located in a country with high teaching standards.
Similarly, most information technology teaching roles will ask for a postgraduate diploma. If you’re from the UK, this needs to be in the form of a PGCE. Failure to meet the above qualification requirements might limit your ability to teach information technology abroad.
Once again, whether or not you need experience to teach information technology abroad will depend on the type of role that you seek, as well as the location you want to teach in. If you’re looking for a serious career move in a country that follows a similar education framework as the UK, then you can be all-but-certain that you’ll need to hold at least 1-3 years experience.
For example, if you wanted to teach information technology at a secondary school in Australia, then you’ll be asked to demonstrate prior experience in a similar in-class setting. Similarly, if opting for a private international school in Bangkok, it’s likely that the standards will be just as high.
At the other end of the spectrum, not all teaching opportunities will require experience. Instead, if you’re in possession of a strong academic profile that includes at least a Master’s Degree and a postgraduate teaching diploma, your application is still likely to be considered.
If you like the sound of teaching information technology abroad, and you think you hold the required profile, you’ll find heaps of opportunities listed on this page.
