Successful applicants must have:

Role Overview:
Sherborne School is seeking a passionate, energetic, and highly motivated Preparatory Physical Education (PE) Coordinator to lead and enhance our PE curriculum and extracurricular activities. This role involves overseeing the PE provision across the school, ensuring a high-quality and inclusive PE program that encourages students to engage in physical activity, promotes healthy lifestyles, and supports the holistic development of each child.
The PE Coordinator will work closely with the Senior Leadership Team, teachers, and support staff to ensure that PE is effectively integrated into the school’s overall curriculum and ethos.
Key Responsibilities:
Curriculum Leadership & Development:
- Lead the design, implementation, and ongoing review of the PE curriculum, ensuring it aligns with the National Curriculum and reflects current best practices.
- Develop and adapt PE schemes of work for different year groups, ensuring progression and coverage of skills.
- Ensure the PE curriculum is inclusive and caters to all students, regardless of ability or background, and promotes diversity and equality.
Team Leadership & Support:
- Provide leadership, guidance, and support to class teachers delivering PE lessons, ensuring consistency and high standards of teaching across the school.
- Organize and lead regular professional development opportunities for staff to enhance their PE teaching skills and knowledge.
- Support and mentor new or less experienced staff in delivering PE, including providing model lessons or co-teaching opportunities.
Assessment & Monitoring: - Oversee the assessment and tracking of student progress in PE, ensuring that all pupils are meeting their full potential.
- Monitor and evaluate the quality of PE provision across the school through lesson observations, data analysis, and feedback from staff and students.
- Use data and feedback to adjust the curriculum and teaching strategies to improve student outcomes in PE.
Extracurricular Activities & Events:
- Organize, promote, and manage a variety of extracurricular sports clubs, competitions, and school events (both within and outside of school).
- Foster partnerships with local schools and organizations to enhance sports opportunities for students.
- Lead and support the organization of school sports days, inter-school competitions, and other events that encourage participation and sportsmanship.
Health & Wellbeing Promotion:
- Work with other staff to embed physical activity and wellbeing across the school’s wider curriculum, promoting a whole-school approach to health and fitness.
- Lead initiatives that encourage healthy lifestyles, including partnerships with local sports organizations or health campaigns.
- Ensure students are educated about the importance of physical activity, healthy eating, and mental wellbeing.
Resource Management & Budgeting:
- Oversee the management of PE resources and equipment, ensuring that they are well-maintained, safe, and available for use.
- Manage the PE department’s budget effectively, making sure that resources and funding are spent appropriately to maximize the impact of PE provision.
- Research and apply for external funding or grants to enhance the school’s PE offer.
Communication & Engagement: - Keep parents, staff, and students informed about PE activities, initiatives, and events through newsletters, the school website, and other communication channels.
- Develop strong relationships with external sports organizations, local clubs, and other educational institutions to provide additional opportunities for students.
- Attend regular meetings with the Senior Leadership Team to report on PE provision and its impact on the school community.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Sports Science, or a related field.
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent.
- Current First Aid certification.
Skills & Experience:
- Significant experience of teaching PE at primary level (ideally 3+ years).
- Strong knowledge of the National Curriculum for Physical Education and an understanding of primary education pedagogy.
- Experience of leading or coordinating a subject area or department.
- Proven ability to plan, implement, and evaluate a curriculum and programs for physical education.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with staff, students, parents, and external organizations.
- Experience in organizing sports events, extracurricular activities, or inter-school competitions.
Desirable:
- Additional coaching qualifications in specific sports (e.g., football, gymnastics, swimming).
- Knowledge of sports development and how to implement local or national initiatives.
- Experience in leading whole-school health and wellbeing initiatives.
- Ability to analyze data and use it to inform practice and improvement.
- Understanding of Special Educational Needs (SEND) and how to support diverse learning needs in PE.
