Work environment:

The work week: Tuesday – Saturday

A typical work day:

10:30-11:20 Kindergarten class (then  ~2hr break)

14:00-14:50 Adult small group class (then admin/lesson planning ~1:30hr)

17:00-18:30 Children small group class

19:00-20:30 Adult/Teen/Company class

*This is just an example, times vary.

Kindergartens are not every morning (usually 2-3 times a week).

Saturdays start earlier, usually around 9:30am, but we usually finish earlier, around 3-4pm.

We occasionally hold events (e.g. Halloween party) for the students, these are usually held on Saturday afternoons or evenings. Even though it requires working later on a Saturday, they are enjoyable and a good chance for you to have fun and bond with your students.

Please be prepared for the working hours. This is not a normal nine to five job. The work day starts later, therefore ending in the evening resulting in unsociable hours during the work week.

On the positive side, unlike most schools, the majority of classes have pre-made materials and curriculums, though you will have to prepare a little for each class. Marking of homework is usually done in class.

*Even though there is an abundance of material available, this has only been possible due to teachers helping to create lesson plans and materials (e.g. PowerPoints) and we plan to continue to update and create new teaching resources over the teaching year. Therefore this will be a part of your job, and usually teachers enjoy this part as it gives them freedom to be creative.

Location and Company

We have two private classrooms within a large cram school in Ube-city, Yamaguchi-prefecture. Most of the classes will be taught here, however, the teacher will be required to drive to other locations such as companies, kindergartens, high schools, or private residencies, and occasionally other neighbouring cities.

Anglobe opened over six years ago. Our staff include the owner, two full-time teachers and office staff. We also work closely with staff from our franchise headquarters in Hiroshima and work side-by-side with Japanese teachers who teach a variety of subjects in the cram school.

We are a close-knit school and welcome anyone who is eager to be a part of our ‘family’. Everyone is very friendly and eager to help a new teacher settle into Anglobe, no problem too big or small, whether it’s in regard to teaching, or life in Japan.

Ube is a relatively small city for Japan, with a population of around 170,000 people. It has almost everything you need for daily life, cinemas, gym, shopping malls, restaurants etc. The city is also surrounded by nature including some beautiful beaches to the north, mountains for climbing and a very large cave for exploring. The nearest large and well-known cities are Hiroshima to the east and Fukuoka to the west, both around a 2 hour drive. There are a large handful of foreigners living in or around Ube, mostly teachers from other companies, who are welcoming and engage in social activities regularly, they can introduce you to many Japanese friends too.

Applicants must be interested in Japanese life and culture, and willing to share their own culture with the students, in particular with adults.

You do not need to know any Japanese when you arrive, but must be willing to start learning immediately, as this will help incredibly in the teaching environment and in daily life.

We are looking for an applicant who cares for their students and who is genuinely interested in teaching and expanding their own knowledge as well as that of their students. We expect every single student to gain confidence and results in the English language, with the teacher also realising that each student is an individual with a different learning pace and style, and the teacher being able to recognise this and adapt their teaching for them. As a company we want to support our students as much as possible, always going the extra mile and not stopping as soon as the clock hits the finish time. We always give students homework and we have an English library for students to check out books each week.  We occasionally organise events/parties/social time for our students and staff so that everyone feels part of a community. The teacher will be expected to help organise and attend, and hopefully also enjoy these occasions!

More information will be given in the interview (Skype or Zoom). If you succeed in receiving an interview, please prepare beforehand any questions regarding the company, teaching, Ube or any information that you will need.
